Aboubacar Camara has practiced West African drumming and dance since the age of six. As a child, Camara trained and performed for seven years with the Children’s Troupe of the Republic of Guinea. Camara continued to practice his craft into adulthood, leading a professional West African Drum and Dance performance group called Bougarabou Performance Troupe from 1997 – 2002. Although based in Senegal, the group traveled to locations including Japan, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Australia to perform. Before relocating to Oklahoma, Camara also worked for several years within the public school system of Atlanta, Georgia.

Camara moved to Oklahoma in 2012, and formed a new percussion group: Conakry Percussion, which has performed at numerous venues and events around the Oklahoma City area. Camara has also worked as an accompanist for African Dance classes at the University of Central Oklahoma and the University of Oklahoma. Currently, Camara teaches both an African drum and and an African dance class at Metropolitan School of Dance in Oklahoma City. He has recently formed a youth performance group called Kountiya, and is working with them to develop a repertoire for performance.
