Artisans Recap: Art Beyond the Glass

October 05, 2017

Craft cocktails, art and sweet, sweet tunes all combined last Sunday for what was the second, of what is hoped to be an annual occurrence, Art Beyond the Glass!

Art Beyond the Glass started in 2011 in Los Angeles and migrated to Oklahoma City in 2016. This event celebrates the unique bar culture and art scene in each city with proceeds benefiting different non-profits each year. In 2017, the chosen non-profit was Arts Council Oklahoma City.

Benefiting Arts Council OKC made the event a perfect fit for the young professional group of Arts Council OKC, the Artisans, to be responsible for volunteer-staffing the event. Weeks before the event took place, several Artisan members met with Arts Council OKC staff and the event organizer, Josh Cockle, several times to get briefed on what was in store for Oklahoma City, plan exciting elements, and think through the event set-up; all of this leading up to Sunday, September 24th, 2017!

Before the event took place – at 51st St. Speakeasy, a business that donated it’s space for the event –  Artisans were helping to direct traffic; getting bartenders, artists and food vendors headed in the right direction, the event was off to a great start.

When the event opened for the night, guests were welcomed by several Artisan faces as they checked-in at will call or bought their tickets at the door. They then walked through the Speakeasy’s several different spaces which housed unique bar spaces that the resident bartending team took pride in decorating to enhance the crafted cocktail experience they’d been working on leading up to the event. Guests were taken from one experience to another; from a local OKC Market experience to a fall festival to a sweet island retreat!

On the second floor of the Speakeasy guests could find a raffle table that included raffle prizes that ranged from a hand-built, fully stocked bar to a night at the Skirvin and dinner at Mickey Mantle Steakhouse to a gumball machine full of jellybeans! Artisans were stationed there, ready to sell raffle tickets that would be drawn at random later in the evening to very enthusiastic crowd on the first floor.

In addition to the raffle, Artisans worked to answer questions about artwork donated by Oklahoma City Artists for the events silent auction. Featured art included everything from sketches to sculpture to large graffiti style paintings. This area was full of energy as the close of the silent auction neared and guests hovered around to keep an eye on their bids to ensure they won their favorite pieces.

As in 2016, Art Beyond the Glass did not disappoint! Somehow every one of our senses were activated; from the tastes of the cocktails, to the sounds of so many unique musical acts, over to the MIO bar which even brought our sense of smell into it, we threw our heads back in laughter and friendship at the feeling of having another momentous event go down in the books!
